As children when we went in the car with our parents, we (usually) didn’t feel the need to ask for all the directions on how we were going to get to our destination. Wherever we went, we trusted whoever was in the driver’s seat to get us to where we needed to be. So why do we find it so difficult to live like this with God our Father?
Particularly when facing difficult seasons, we demand that God give us clarity about our situation in order to put our trust in him, but that leads us to put our faith in the details and not the source.
I’ve heard it put like this before. Life is like a dot-to-dot puzzle. A bunch of dots scattered across a page. Does your life sometimes feel this way? A dot here. A dot there, with no clear resemblance of a completed puzzle to show what it is all about. Sometimes dots stand alone as big question marks and there seems to be no connecting line.
Often things in our lives just don’t make sense, but clarity doesn’t build a solid faith. The root of our trust must come from knowing the simple truth that God loves us and will do what is best for us (Jeremiah 29:11), a truth worth meditating on in this season of uncertainty. When we know God loves us, we can be firmly planted no matter what life throws our way.
Luckily for us, God’s thoughts are higher than our thoughts and His ways are higher than our ways (Isaiah 55:8-9). God sees the bigger picture as he draws the lines that connect the dots one by one. It may seem like random dots to you, but He sees them as pathways to reveal His completed work.
Let this song be a reminder to us today to put our trust in Him and the Masterpiece He has designed for each one of us.
